SMUUF Food Healers

On the second Monday of each month from 4:00-5:00 pm, SMUUF Food Healers serve fruit and a main dish, using a recipe from the Universal Meals program, to food-insecure people.

Universal Meals recipes avoid the top nine food allergens in the US.  We have fun and are grateful to be able to provide this nourishing food.

We love having more volunteers! Come join us at the Southside Community Center in San Marcos and help the community as well.

The next opportunity for serving at Southside is July 14. Join us!

You Are Invited to Something Extraordinary

July 13, 2026 at Southside Community Center, San Marcos, TX

Greetings! We are so glad you are interested in volunteering to bring a main dish and/or fruit for the Southside Community Center

We are scheduled to serve the meals from 4-5pm (set up and clean up will make it 3:30-5:00) on the second Monday of each month.

You will choose a date to provide the main dish (3 persons) or fruit (1 person). When your group decides which main dish to bring, we ask that you use this Unity Stew recipe, this Burrito Bowls recipe, this Hoppin’ John Salad, or this Chickpea Salad recipe. Check with your group to see which recipe you’ll use.  We are working in conjunction with the local Food Healers group, and follow the guidance of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and their Universal Meals program. The recipes we have chosen avoid the most common food allergens and sugar, and can be served to all patrons of the center. If you have questions about what substitutions might follow the Universal Meals guidelines, please see the Unity Stew template.  You do not need to be vegan or plant-based yourself; we just ask that you follow the Universal Meals recipes when you cook for Food Healers meals.

When you buy ingredients, you will be reimbursed for the ingredients you purchase; just keep your receipts and turn them in to Rebecca Allen. For each person making the recipe that serves 15, the cost is approximately $30.

We have found that only one or two people are needed to serve the main dish and fruit. That means that two people could drop off their main dish or fruit and leave if they need to, as long as at least one stays to serve. We now serve in the larger building at the front rather than the smaller building at the back of the lot.  This is a big improvement: it allows more interaction with the people eating as well as giving us much more room to serve.

Thank you for your generosity and concern in providing nutritious, delicious meals for those who may be food insecure in the San Marcos community. We are glad that SMUUF is once again involved in providing these meals, after a hiatus of several years.  In the past, we had many generous, dependable, and selfless SMUUF members who routinely provided meals, and we know that will continue now that we are able to resume this offering.

Imagine a place where anyone can gather around the table, share nourishing food, meet new friends, and explore solutions for personal, community, and planetary wellbeing.
